Black Mountain, NC

Why I chose Black Mountain and the process of creating the PSA

As a child, my heart and mind longed to be immersed in nature

and forestry. Just the thought of the mountains brought me feelings of serenity. e sound of the birds chirping songs, the buzzing cicadas, the rushing water through various creeks and streams, and the slight crunch of leaves as they oat to the ground. I found exactly that in Black Mountain, NC.

My family and I made our first visit when I was in middle school, and it has been a trip we make every year since then. I wanted to be able to express my love for Black Mountain while also imploring others to visit and feel the exact same thing as I did, which is where the PSA comes in.

I intended to approach the PSA with a unique concept that would grasp the attention of the audience. I came up with the idea to make some of the footage I captured have a VHS/film overlay which would then transition into “present day” in order to send the message of Black Mountain’s timeless charm that has survived throughout generations. I was able to capture amazing shots of the nature and wildlife that inhabited the area, as well as get a great amount of diversity in angles.

Moreover, I wrote a script for the voiceover to t the footage, which was mostly composed of the pathos appeal, and recorded it. Additionally, I had to piece everything together in Adobe Premiere Pro, add the vhs/lm overlay, the music, natural sounds, add a transition and text, cut and t to frame, etc.

Through the experience of creating this PSA, I took on many roles and discovered what were my strengths, what areas I lacked, and how to expand in those areas and learn. I was the writer, director, producer, filter, and editor. Being in every one of those positions helped me understand the stakes, time, and energy it requires to pull off a project in the media and entertainment industry.

In the photojournalism/documentary business, it is crucial to understand Adobe, the importance of diverse camera angles, and the uniqueness and specificity of wording in your writing. These skills and experiences will help me execute future projects that reflect utility, emotion, passion, and information.
