A Familiar Face: Exploring Behind The Scenes
People seek excitement and thrill, it derives from a natural human instinct- curiosity. One way to satisfy this need is through horror and thriller movies. What better season is there to delve into the world of horror and thriller than the Halloween season?
The Process
When my group and I, composed of Sam Kemp, Caroline Collins, Stella Garcia, and Henderson Hughes, were given the task of brainstorming ideas for a short horror story I ran at the opportunity to express my concept. I am an extremely creative thinker and writer, so the ability to have that creative freedom was so exciting for me. I came up with the idea for the story, the name (A Familiar Face), and was able to serve as a director and actor. I loved that my groupmates, Stella especially, helped expand my ideas with suggestions.
Sam excelled in giving advice on what angles to utilize for each scene and shot, as well as just being our go-to man behind the camera. Caroline and Henderson dove into their Adobe Premiere skills and executed the editing and sound of the story so beautifully. Overall, I feel like our group worked extremely well together and we were given the chance to flourish in each of our individual strengths.

What I learned
I learned about the variety of camera angles that are required to create sequences and to fully grasp what is happening in the scene. The diversity of angles and shots is absolutely crucial in setting the scene and getting the message across to the audience. This knowledge is a necessity for my future in communications and photojournalism.
Moreover, overshooting is required. If you overshoot everything and one shot does not end up working out, you will have options. That is something I learned the hard way with my previous Digital Storytelling assignments and something I will remember if I am shooting documentaries or interviews in the future.
